Cultivating truffle plants

Growing truffle plants:info oncultivation of black and white truffles. From the soil to the plants.

Who are you thinking ofgrow truffles in pots or grow truffles at home… He's just fantasizing! Theretruffle cultivationit is an operation that requires time and a small initial investment for the preparation ofmycorrhizal plants. Mushroom cultivation can be done at home, but that of thetruffleit's a much more complex story! Despite the complexity of thecultivation of truffles, on this page we will see how to grow truffles in your own land.

Mycorrhizal plant: truffle plant

Forgrow truffleswe need totruffle plants. Amycorrhizal plantit is nothing but a plant in which the hyphae have been inoculated. In nature, the truffle produces hyphae, structures that are able to exploit the superficial root system of the plant to draw water. In fact, the truffle alone is not self-sufficient because it does not have structures capable of withdrawing nutrients from the soil.

To cultivate the truffle we need plants that have hyphae, therefore plants capable of allowing the development of the truffle. There is no shortage of artificially inoculated truffle plants on the market, complete with certification!

Inoculation cannot take place in the home, therefore, if we intend to grow truffles, we must be willing to purchase mycorrhized plants.

There are many truffle plants and these should be chosen based on the territory in which it intends to start the truffle production. Among the truffle plants that can be artificially mycorrhized, we point out:

  • cedars
  • Oaks
  • Poplars
  • Willows
  • Linden trees
  • Pines
  • Kernels
  • hornbeams
  • cyst
  • some fruit plants ...

The choice of plants should be made based on the availability of land. The stones, for example, require a sixth of a plant with a more limited size. On the other hand, those who intend to use oaks will have to choose a sixth plant (distance between the plants) of at least 5 x 5 meters.

At an amateur level, for a good onetruffle production, you should have at least 600 square meters of land in order to plant at least 10 truffle plants.

Truffle farming: growing truffles

Is calledtruffle cultivationis a branch of agriculture that aims at the production of white or black truffles. To get startedcultivate the truffleit begins with the preparation of the soil which is carried out in seasonal phases.

  • In spring, trees and shrubs already present in the soil are eliminated in order to limit the development of other fungal species.
  • In summer, surface plowing is carried out with sufficiently moist soil. This operation is also aimed at eliminating spores and mycelia of fungi already present in the soil thanks to exposure to air and sun.
  • In autumn the soil is worked in depth so as to prepare it for planting.

The mycorrhizal plants on the market are between two and three years old. They should be planted in holes 30 cm deep and wide. At the bottom of the hole it will be necessary to prepare a drainage layer. Planting must be carried out with extreme care so as not to damage the root tips that present the hyphae.

Cultivating white truffles

Therecultivation of the white truffleit is recommended as a supplement to that of the black truffle. The cultivation of the white truffle gives approximate results because it is really difficult to manage.

Cultivating black truffles

Therecultivation of black truffle plantsit must be performed only on soils of calcareous nature and rich in bone (stony fraction). The soil must have a good supply of potassium and a sub-alkaline reaction. Better if the land is sloping to allow excess water to be removed.

The needs of theblack trufflemake its cultivation suitable in those reclaimed land, marginal and unsuitable for the cultivation of herbaceous or fruit plants.
