Biodynamic wine, peculiarities and practices

We hear more and more often about "biodynamic wine"Or" wine produced with grapes grown with biodynamic method ", but precisely, what is it?

The characteristic appearance of thebiodynamic wineit is given by the link with the earth and the reconstitution of the natural fertility of the soil. Not only a slightly different agricultural method but also a different oenological phase, in fact an enology is proposed that "uses techniques such as the cooling of the tanks, the control of fermentation by means of temperature and which does not distort the must" (Pescarmona, 2004).

Another difference between organic wine and biodynamic wineis in the respect of some peasant traditions, for example, the winemaking must take into account the positions of the planets. The harvest should preferably be done by hand while natural materials are preferred for packing and packaging, better if recycled. Glass, natural corks (branded only on fire), wax are allowed ... ionizing or chlorine treatments are not allowed.

Thebiodynamic winecan count on the Demeter brand, a worldwide association founded in 1927 as a cooperative to market agricultural products based on holistic practices.

From an ideological point of view, thebiodynamic agriculture attempts to maintain a natural balance between the elements, starting from the soil with all its organisms to obtain - in the case of wine - healthy vines and high quality grapes.

In biodynamics it is essential to take care of natural resources and to favor life processes according to exact guidelines as a result of the action of earthly and cosmic forces together.

In practice, these theoretical concepts translate into the use of what are the "biodynamic preparations". This means that inbiodynamic agriculture are not used, like that biological, chemically synthesized products and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Natural preparations obtained from fermentation processes, decoctions and minerals, such as quartz powder, are administered in homeopathic doses; even the administrations, such as harvesting and winemaking, must be carried out taking into account the lunar and solar influence (of the phases of the moon and sun). The lunar calendar is also followed incellar for decanting and bottling.

The land of the vineyards is worked according to traditional methods such as the use of the old plow with the horse and not with the tractor, all with the aim of regenerating and revitalizing the soil as it happened with past generations. The choice of the plow to replace the tractor is driven by the desire to keep the fauna of the soil (insects, worms and other organisms useful in keeping parasites away) unaltered.

But the result of the practicesbiodynamic, will it really be better than that obtained with biological practices?
